Seed Saving for Open-Pollinated Heirlooms

While runner propagation is more common for many strawberry varieties, saving seeds from true open-pollinated heirloom strawberries is a vital practice for preserving genetic diversity, especially for those varieties that produce few runners (like many Alpine types).

  • Select Best Fruit: Choose fully ripe, healthy, blemish-free fruit from your most vigorous and productive plants. This ensures you save seeds from the strongest genetic stock.
  • Extracting Seeds: Strawberry seeds are tiny and embedded on the surface of the fruit. There are several methods for extraction:
    • Drying Method: Scrape the seeds off the skin of the berry with a knife, trying to take as little pulp as possible. Spread the scraped seeds and pulp thinly on a paper plate or screen to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area for several days.   • Cleaning and Drying: After extraction, ensure the seeds are completely clean of any pulp, as residual sugars can lead to mold. Thoroughly air dry the seeds for at least 1-2 weeks in a cool, dark, well-ventilated space until they are brittle.
  • Storage: Store dried seeds in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight container (like a glass jar with a desiccant packet or a sealed envelope). Labeled with the variety and date, properly stored strawberry seeds can remain viable for several years.

Be aware that growing strawberries from seed can be a slow process, and some heirloom varieties may have specific stratification (cold treatment) requirements for successful germination. Always research the specific requirements for the variety you are growing.

Maintaining Genetic Purity

To ensure your saved seeds or propagated runners remain true to the heirloom variety, be mindful of cross-pollination. If you are growing multiple open-pollinated strawberry varieties that bloom at the same time and are in close proximity, they can cross-pollinate. While this doesn’t affect the fruit on the current plant, seeds saved from such fruit may produce offspring with mixed characteristics. If maintaining absolute genetic purity for seed saving is critical, you may need to grow only one variety at a time or isolate different varieties, for example, by planting them far apart or using row covers during flowering to prevent insect cross-pollination.

By engaging in propagation and seed saving, you not only ensure a continuous supply of delicious organic heirloom strawberries for your garden but also contribute to a larger movement of preserving valuable plant genetics for future generations of gardeners and food enthusiasts.
